RAM stands for Random Access Memory, It is also called as main memory, read write memory, system memory or primary memory. In this article we will learn about what is RAM and advantages and disadvantages of RAM, which will help you to take important decision on your PC or Laptop.
Types of RAM
- SRAM(Static Random Access Memory)
SRAM(Static Random Access Memory) is a type of memory, it is stores the data in its memory as long as it gets a power supply. SRAM is most commonly used for cache memory of the computer. SRAM cost is more than DRAM and access data very quickly.
Following are the advantages of SRAM:
- It is simple.
- It is mush faster than DRAM.
- Reliable.
- It is used to create cache.
- Low ideal power consumption
- High performance.
- It requires medium power.
Following are the disadvantages of SRAM:
- Costly compared to DRAM.
- High operation power consumption.
- Its storage capacity is low.
- Density.
- Design is very complex.
2. DRAM(Dynamic Radom Access Memory):
DRAM((Dynamic Radom Access Memory) is a dynamic memory stores the data bits in capacitors. DRAM has smaller data life than static RAM and cost is less than SRAM. Capacitor can be charged or discharged.
Following are the Advantages of DRAM:
- DRAM size is very small.
- It is most commonly used in computer and laptop.
- Its storage capacity is high compared to SRAM.
- It is slower access time than SDRAM.
- DRAM is cheaper than SRAM.
Following are the Disadvantages of DRAM:
- DRAM has more power consumption.
- Speed is very low compared to SRAM.
RAM(Random Access Memory)
Following are the Advantages of RAM:
- RAM is more power efficient.
- RAM can write both read and write operations.
- RAM cost is less than Solid state drive (SSD).
- It provide high speed data access.
- It operate faster than Solid state drive(SSD) and Hard drive storage.
- It consume the less power compared to disk drive.
- It is temporary volatile(Memory).
- They have more storage capacity for processing purpose.
- It is enables multitasking and quick application switching.
Following are the Disadvantages of RAM:
- RAM is slower than CPU cache.
- The capacity of RAM is limited than all other memory devices.
- RAM can be expensive compared to other types of memory because of its high performance capacity.
- RAM is volatile memory.
- Storage is less than all other memory devices.
Difference between RAM and ROM:
- RAM is temporary storage, ROM is permeant storage.
- Read and write supported in RAM, Whereas In ROM only read operation is supported.
- RAM data store in MBs, whereas ROM data stored in GBs.
- RAM is volatile, ROM is non Volatile.
- RAM is more costlier than ROM, ROM is cheaper than RAM.
- RAM is used in normal operation while RAM is used startup process of computer.
