Pros and cons of net neutrality

The principle of net neutrality states that all internet connections should be treated equally. If there is no net neutrality, internet service providers can discriminate against websites and regulate what users can can can not see. However, it has been five years since the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) officially revoked net neutrality. Nonetheless, the argument over whether net neutrality is beneficial or bad continues. Let us dive deep into the pros and cons of net neutrality to understand it better.

Pros of Net Neutrality | Advantages

  1. People have the freedom to use whatever website they want.
  2. You will not have to pay more money if you wish for all packages.
  3. You will not be forced to use the internet provider’s website if you use their internet.
  4. People will have equal internet speed for all websites.
  5. Net neutrality protects online free speech by banning internet service providers from blocking content.
  6. Net neutrality safeguards customers by prohibiting ISPs from speeding up, slowing down, or charging higher prices for some internet content.
  7. Internet service providers can charge companies for improving services without net neutrality.
  8. Net neutrality promotes competition by providing a level playing field for new enterprises.

Cons of Net Neutrality | Disadvantages

  1. Net neutrality decreases investment in internet services, resulting in less access and higher consumer costs.
  2. Less network innovation.
  3. No free internet access.
  4. Net neutrality requires customers to pay solely for the service they utilize, not the data they use. Thus, nobody pays for the data.
  5. Offensive, dangerous, and illegal stuff is freely available and difficult to delete.
  6. Tiresome regulations. Under net neutrality legislation, the FCC is required to oversee ISPs’ compliance with these standards. This includes filing reports twice a year, which may be expensive for any big ISP.
  7. ISPs can only invest in infrastructure if they can charge more for their services. With net neutrality, large volumes of data are consumed without being paid for; this money might be used to expand the high-speed network to rural areas. As a result, no new infrastructure was built.
