The artificial intelligence can be classified into two main types based on functionality and another is based on capabilities. Let us check out both types in detail in this article to know more about artificial intelligence. For more details find out the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence to know more about it.
Types based on functionality:
Reactive Machine
These are the most basic and oldest types of artificial intelligence. They replicate the capacity of a person to respond to various kinds of stimuli. That kind of artificial intelligence has no brain capacity, so they don’t have the ability to use previously acquired information to get better results.
Example: The chess-playing supercomputer of IBM called Deep Blue. It is famous for defeating international grandmaster Garry Kasparov in the 1990s.
Limited Theory
These AI have memory capacities along with the ability of reactive machines so they can use past information to make better future decisions. Most of the common applications existing around us fall under this category.
Example: Self-driving cars used Memory technology. They store data like GPS location, speed of nearby cars and store kinds of data to drive just like humans.
Theory of Mind
This AI is the next level of AI. It is limited to no presence in our day to day lives. This kind of AI is mostly in the Work in Progress level and is usually confined to research laboratories. The AI should be able to alter its own response based on their knowledge of human minds and their whims.
Example: The robot determines its action based on its common sense of how other robots will move.
Self-Aware AI
This type is the final stage of AI. The current existence is only imaginary and can only be seen in Science Fiction Films. This type of AI is decades if not centuries away from materialization. This is because once it is self-aware, the AI can enter the mode of self-preservation that may find humanity as a potential threat and may undertake efforts to end humanity directly or indirectly.
Types based on capabilities:
Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)
This is a basic type and all the existing AI applications which we see all fall under these types. This type includes an AI system that can perform defined specific tasks just like humans. Such types of AI, however, can not perform tasks for which they have not been programmed in advance, so they fail to perform unparalleled tasks.
Example: AI algorithms that we use today for performing the most complex prediction modeling.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
This type of AI is capable of studying, training, recognizing, and executing functions just as a human does. AGI has multifunctional capabilities that will spread through various domains. Such systems will be more flexible and, when facing unimaginable situations, will adapt and improvise just as humans do. There is no real-world example of this type of AI.
Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)
This type of AI will be the topmost point of AI development. ASI is the most powerful type of intelligence in the world. Because of their inordinately superior data processing, memory, and decision-making ability, it will be able to perform all the tasks better than humans. Many of the researchers believe that inevitably the emergence of ASI would result in Technological Singularity. It is a hypothetical situation in which technological development would hit an uncontrollable level that will bring about an unprecedented change in human society.
